10 Amazing Romantic Getaways

10 Amazing Romantic Getaways

We have created this lovers list of the 10 dreamiest destinations in Africa. Our resident experts at AAC tracked the most romantic properties in the African bush (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it)!

#10 - Tongabezi Lodge near Victoria Falls, Zambia

Tongabezi Lodge is an exclusive lodge on the Zambezi Riveria above Victoria Falls. There are four luxury suites called the Honeymoon, Tree, Dog and Bird Houses each with stunning elevated views of the river. Then there are five, smaller river cottages situated along the river bank – our favorite is #5. The rooms are spacious with enormous windows and sliding doors at the front leading to a terrace with plenty of sun loungers, a shower and a hammock. The food at the lodge is superb – just liking dining on the Mediterranean with several private spots tucked away!

#9 - Little Kulala, Namibia

Our AAC senior consultant Kyle Witten says “the Namib desert is known for the clear night southern skies”. The stars form the canopy over your bed on the unique rooftop platform. Don’t worry about creature comforts out amongst the creatures, there’s a plush double bed.

#8 - Elephant Camp, Zimbabwe

Located on a private concession on the Zambezi Gorge below Victoria Falls, this is home to a family of orphan elephant and a cheetah Sylvester, where you can enjoy close up walking interactions. The luxury suites invite you to enjoy the views of Victoria Falls’ spray and the gorges. Meals are served in the open-air dining room and Ian Flores remarks this is a perfect “hang out” spot for a sundowner.

#7 - Angama Mara, Kenya

High above the Masai Mara game reserve where some of the most memorable scenes from “Out of Africa” were filmed is the most dramatic safari lodge setting in Kenya, Angama Mara. Couples will feel like they’re literally walking on air at the lodge, from experiencing their own private picnic spot to a balloon safari, a flight of a lifetime that soars high above the Mara, and then comes back to earth with a champagne picnic for two. This is Mark Nolting’s honeymoon choice!

#6 - Chem Chem, Tanzania

Lynne Glasgow and Elena Theodosiou both love to include this romantic camp in a honeymoon trip. A magical camp where unspoiled Africa exists; where the special privilege of absorbing the, majestic grandeur of the African landscapes and its untamed wildlife is still possible. From the moment you are met by your host/guide he will make you feel that you are on an authentic safari. The philosophy is to experience the bush in addition to viewing wildlife in nearby Tarangire and Lake Manyara.

#5 - Savanna, Sabi Sand, South Africa

AAC’s Jessica Fraser says Savanna will easily change your mind about staying in a luxury tent. There is nothing more romantic than to sleep under the elegant canopy in your room, in addition to viewing wildlife in one of Africa’s top wildlife private reserves.

#4 - Bisate, Rwanda

Alison Nolting, senior consultant, recently gorilla trekked in Rwanda and gushes about the warm and fuzzy you can experience together viewing the Silverback and other family members in the group! Each of the 6 secluded villas at the new Bisate has uninterrupted vistas over the Volcanoes Rainforest. Meals can be served in the eclectic dining room or a table for two can be set as a decidedly romantic surprise.

#3 - Azura Benguerra, Mozambique

Szilvia Hegyi gushes that this is a fabulous beach getaway! Mozambique’s finest eco-boutique retreat is located on Benguerra Island. Azura has 16 beachfront villas, providing you privacy and pampering. Each beachfront villa has air-conditioning and private sun deck. Dining at Azura is a feast for the senses. The chef’s signature dishes combine the finest of Mozambique’s natural produce and seafood with international flair.

#2 - Baraza, Zanzibar

A family owned luxury resort that provides personal service and a range of beautifully appointed facilities reflecting the warmth and character of the local architecture. Baraza is located along a pristine white beach on the east coast of the islands. Each of the elegant villas features a bedroom, living room, en suite bathroom, Jacuzzi and private terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean. There is a pool, dining room, evening bar and pool bar and massage facilities.

Drumroll - a tie for first place in 2017!

#1 - Singita, Tanzania

Located in a remote corner of the Serengeti is the Grumeti Reserve and the world famous 5-star luxury accommodations by Singita. Their portfolio of romantic lodges and camps include the decadent Faru Faru suites, the chic Singita Mara and blissful Sabora. Arguably some of the best game viewing in East Africa, explore the region with morning and afternoon game drives. Large prides of lions and majestic leopards complete the iconic safari experience.

#1 - Duba Plains, Botswana

Built on an island, many consider Duba Plains to be the Okavango’s Maasai Mara because of the sheer volume of wildlife. The intimate camp consists of five traditional-style tents designed by Dereck Joubert to fit into the forest and to take advantage of the shapes and textures of shade but also to evoke the old classic African safari style of the 1920’s. It is a wildlife connoisseur’s getaway with literally thousands of animals in an almost endless pattern across the flood plains.  Alison Nolting concurs – magic!
