Chitabe Lediba – Day 1
Arrived yesterday into Chitabe Lediba! Everyone here makes you feel at home.
On our first game drive we saw four lions, a big herd of elephant, warthogs, impala, zebra and lots of giraffes and ending the day with a gorgeous sunset. At night the lions were calling. This morning we saw a leopard, when a hyena came around the corner. The leopard tucked into the bush undetected and came out of the thicket and walked right in front of the vehicle! Next, we’re off to Qorokwe!
Qorokwe – Day 2+3
The first word is ‘wow’! Qorokwe is snazzy! Big beautiful rooms and main areas. We had a serene mokoro ride in the setting sun followed by sundowners. This morning, we found our second leopard just lazing about. Lots of zebra, kudu, buffalo and giraffe, baboons, and a couple of female lionesses. This afternoon we saw two white rhino, and completed the Big 5 in one day with a herd of elephant, including a tiny little baby! Our guide is terrific too! Did a night game drive and saw an African wild cat, porcupines and springhares. Tomorrow we’re off to Little Mombo.
Little Mombo – Day 4+5
The Mombo airstrip was getting a bit of work done, so we flew into Xigera airstrip and then we took a helicopter into camp. It was the coolest thing ever!! And Little Mombo camp does not disappoint. Gorgeous rooms that go on forever. The outside decks are spacious, with swing beds and private plunge pools to cool down. And on the first game drive, TWO leopards! This morning we saw two black rhino along a river bed loaded with crocs and lots of plains game and birds coming into eat and drink. This afternoon we saw two lionesses with their 7 cubs drinking after an obviously large meal. Lots of hippos in another lagoon. We are getting spoiled here!
Xaranna – Day 6
We arrived at Xaranna and have the camp to ourselves! It’s lovely and sits on a nice lagoon with hippos and loads of birds. We had a chance to enjoy our private plunge pool in the heat of the day. Off we went on our afternoon game drive and found hyena, lion cubs, and some beautiful eagles and kites. I think I’m becoming an “official” birder! After finding yet another leopard, we were taken to our surprise sundowner in the bush. We also finished the day with a romantic dinner for two, under the stars, at the end of the pier, surrounded by candlelight. Tomorrow we’re off to the final camp.
Nxabega – Day 7
Last camp – Nxabega. The camp is beautiful, mixing modern with classic in just the right way. Rooms are very comfortable. We managed to see a beautiful male lion on the afternoon game drive who was calling for his mate. Then down by the hippo pool, there was a big herd of red lechwe, a couple of jackals, and a nile monitor lizard on the move. We had another surprise sundowner, complete with champagne and popcorn, biltong, and other crunchy tidbits, with a gorgeous fiery-red sunset. On our last game drive this morning, we saw another leopard, hyena, warthogs, zebra, and finished with a Pel’s Fishing Owl!
We were very sad to leave, but it was an amazing trip! I’m going to miss my daily leopard sightings!
